Radio Protocol
The normal race protocol is to address the station being called twice, then state your call-sign, wait for your call to be acknowledged then relay your message.
If you are receiving a message repeat the station name calling you, your call-sign, then say ‘Go Ahead’.
When transmitting with the radio, firmly press and hold the transmit button, pause for a second then speak slowly and directly across the radio microphone. If
your message takes longer than 30seconds to transmit try saying ‘More Follows Over’…. And wait for your receiver to say ‘Continue’ or ‘Go Ahead’. By
breaking up long messages into smaller parts you will save battery power and reduce the need for your message to be repeated should parts of it not be
received.
For example. If you are "Half Tail End" calling "Marshal Rick" your transmission might be as follows:
(Tx Button) (Pause) ‘Marshal Rick, Marshal Rick, this is Half Tail End over’
(Reply from Marshal Rick) ‘Half Tail End, this is Marshal Rick, Go Ahead’
(Tx Button) (Pause) ‘Marshal Rick, are you in position, over?’
If you are in doubt as to the correct radio protocol don’t worry, it is more important to have a free flow of communications and information than having personnel not transmitting due to doubt over the radio protocols. In other words, if there is a problem we want to hear about it.
Tips:
Make sure the PTT button is not pressed in by accident due to how you are storing/holding it in your clothing/pack etc.
If the radio starts to make a loud "static" sound, you may have accidentally pressed and released the "Squelch" button. Press and release again to stop the noise.
